It's not difficult to fall in love with Chief Charlie Swan, Bella's loving-but-standoffish father. Billy Burke brings such a perfect balance of hilariously awkward and desperately warm to Charlie, who absolutely steals my heart in these movies.
Thank you, Billy, for doing justice to one of my favorite characters in the series.

ReplyDeleteI couldn't possibly list my favourite scenes, nor my favourite lines of his, but if I could narrow it down it would be the scene where he attempts 'the talk' with Bella in the kitchen and she tells him she's a virgin. His comment goes something like, "I'm liking Edward much better now..." and is brilliant! Oh, and I love when he draws a fake angel's halo around his head, but I can't remember when he did that...

My favorite part of Billy Burke's portrayal of Charlie Swan isn't in what he says but in what he doesn't say. The look on his face before he walks Bella down the aisle. His reaction to hugging Bella in BD2 - they never mention her being so cold as they do in the book but you don't need it because of his reaction. And on and on.
ReplyDeleteBilly was perfect for Charlie and I am forever grateful for whomever chose him. The biggest compliment I can give him is that every time I watch Billy portray Charlie, it makes me miss my father so very much.

I remember book Charlie not having much of an effect on me. Flash forward to my 1st viewing of Twilight and I remember sitting in the theater grinning like an idiot & telling my friend that I'm now Team Charlie. Billy's portrayal was perfection.
ReplyDeleteBilly Burke is the perfect Charlie Swan. He owns the character from the non-hovering father to the dad who loves his daughter so much that he's willing to accept only needing to know. I can't imagine any other actor playing Charlie Swan. :)

ReplyDeleteIn the books, I felt like Charlie was just part of the background that was necessary due to her age and the split parent situation. I LOVE movie Charlie because Billy brings so much humor, personality, and emotion to the character.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think back to each movie and each line in an attempt to pick a favorite, I just can't. He has some great lines, which I'm sure is partially attributed to Melissa Rosenberg.
What I think speaks most about Billy's performance as Charlie is how he portrays the emotions of a dad watching his only child go through some of life's biggest challenges and changes. The unbearable heartbreak in New Moon, his concern for her jumping right back in with Edward in Eclipse, the wedding in BD1, and his acceptance of his changed daughter in BD2. The way he portrays the emotions during those scenes could not have been done any better, and I am thankful to have had the pleasure of watching him bring Charlie to life!
every line Charlie speaks is genius. Not just WHAT he says, but HOW... which is why I adore Billy Burke so much, for making Charlie Swan so awesome! I want to meet Billy Burke to thank him, he is one of the cast I have not met and it makes me sad it is over and I may not get the chance.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all of the above. I couldn't love Billy Burke as Charlie more. For right now (always subject to change depending on which movie I've watched most recently), my favorite Charlie moment is when Jacob starts to show him he;s a wolf in BD2. Hi-larious.
ReplyDeleteLove Charlie! Billy did an awesome job of portraying him. I agree with the comments above, I love his facial expressions, I think there is as much in what he doesn't say, than what he says! Two of my all time favourite Charlie scenes are definitely the gun-cleaning when Bella tells him she's going out with Edward in Twilight, and then the scene with just him at his kitchen table with the wedding invitation. Thank you, Billy!
ReplyDeleteReading this blog prompted me to watch Eclipse again tonight. The scene with Bella and Charlie in the kitchen "Dad - I'm a virgin!" - hilarious! Billy is fantastic with the facial expressions there. Love!
